Mineral cosmetics are the latest styling mantra. Whether consumers or brands, none can ignore the rage created by mineral cosmetics. However, what is strange is the fact that, mineral cosmetics are not essentially a new concept. A small company made them some years ago and since then, they attained overnight fame, where suddenly everyone, is all praises for mineral cosmetics.

Could there be a reason behind this trend, that is the slow progress of mineral cosmetics, or is it just a matter of chance? Mineral cosmetics have their own flaws, which are obviously not advertised by the highly competitive mineral cosmetic market. These flaws are not necessarily common to all mineral makeup brands and the exact situation varies, with the manufacturing style. But a deeper insight helps.

Few Ingredients That Could Adversely Affect The Skin

Mineral cosmetics are made from natural elements present in earth and are therefore, considered to be quite safe for skin. However, there are various components present in them that could be harmful.

Titanium Dioxide - An extremely important component of mineral cosmetics, Titanium Dioxide is found in majority of mineral cosmetics, irrespective of the brand producing cosmetics. However, this ingredient is still under scrutiny for its possible connotation with cancer.

Mica - Mica is used in mineral cosmetics to help reduce the appearance of enlarged pores and fine lines. Quiet a famous component, Mica, is bio-accumulative and is considered toxic to the liver and the gastrointestinal and respiratory systems. Not to mention, the Cosmetic Industry Review Board has not scrutinized Mica, which is yet approved by FDA, for usage as a component in cosmetics.

Ultramarine Colors - Ultramarine colors are used to cool down foundations. However, the same are not approved in the United States for use on lips.

Silica - Used as an absorbent and oil control product, in mineral cosmetics, Silica, may be contaminated with small quantities of crystalline quartz. The crystalline quartz is considered to be carcinogenic and must be avoided.

Additionally, there are various other ingredients that could cause irritation or allergy to different skin types.

An analysis of the mentioned simply reflects, the FDA’s casual regulation policies, towards cosmetics in general and mineral cosmetics in particular. Many procedures and ingredients, have not been aptly tested by the Cosmetic Industry Review Board, but are still legal, as have been approved by FDA. Skin is important and damage to the same is possible, if cosmetics are not used prior to apt research.

The Color Compromise - Mineral cosmetics if considered in their 100% natural form, do not offer many color options. For a pure mineral cosmetic, the color liking must be sacrificed. However, many companies add dyes to mineral cosmetics, thus providing, the desired shade chart. But if dyes are to be used, then why so much propaganda, against regular cosmetics, which too have dyes in their composition?

The Talc Controversy - Many believe that talc accentuates wrinkles and not to mention, the same is used in mineral cosmetics. Technically speaking, talc is Magnesium Silicate Hydroxide. Various studies conducted over time, have established a link, between talc and pulmonary tissues, ovarian cancer, and lung, which is even a major concern than the earlier mentioned wrinkles. Please note here, that no conclusive study has yet been made, to determine either the toxicity and/or carcinogenic nature of talc, thus leaving the entire matter in a gray area.

The Impact - Cosmetics are applied for that ultimate look and not a smudgy or heavy mask kind of a feel. But many feel, that this is what mineral cosmetics have to offer. There are further complaints, that mineral products emphasize, upon the fine lines and pores and impart an even aged look.

The ally of mineral cosmetics however, alleges that it is about fine application procedures and manufacturing steps. The finer the minerals, the less shinier they appear. As for the smudgy look, application tips like dabbing with wet sponge, could help.

Despite the debate, mineral cosmetics are gaining in popularity. Bad as they might sound, the mineral version of makeup is still better than their counterpart, the regular cosmetics, which are quite harmful.

Mineral Make Up Will Enhance Your Natural Beauty

Do you have sensitive skin? Are you always breaking out or experiencing facial irritation? Or do you struggle with adult acne? If any of these things are true, you may have just about given up on ever being able to wear makeup again. Fortunately, there is a solution. With mineral make up, you can enjoy your morning make up routine without risking break outs or irritation.

The reason is that mineral make up differs from traditional make up. Unlike traditional make up, artificial colorants and nasty greases and waxes are not include among its ingredients. Instead, all-natural minerals are powdered, ground and purified. This is a long tradition that was already in palce with the Ancient Egyptians, who used ground minerals to color and improve their faces.

This gentle formula will not harm or irritate your facial skin and will not produce irritation or acne. In addition, it was specifically formulated to ensure no change the Ph balance of your skin will occur, preventing oily or dry areas. Mineral make up works to enhance and protect your skin by blanketing the surface and not penetrating the uppermost layer where damage could be caused.

If this weren’t marvelous enough, it is also easy to apply mineral make up, and it looks beautiful in any weather conditions or lighting situation. It is also quick - a light application takes less that five minutes and will make you glow with natural beauty. Many users say they feel and look more "natural" using mineral make ups than with artificial colorants.

To correctly apply mineral make up one should follow three simple steps. First, a sheer cover mineral foundation or pressed mineral foundation makeup should be applied to smooth and beautify the skin. Next, apply a light layer of your favorite color-enhancing mineral makeup across the cheekbones. Finally, apply other make up products you normally use such as eye shadow.

Mineral make up is a great choice if you have regular break outs or even if you only get the occasional pimple. People with sensitive skin can also use mineral makeup. To put on mineral make up it only takes five minutes.

The School Of Professional Makeup Partners With Proctor & Gamble, Wal-mart For Cosmetic Promotion

After choosing the right makeup school, one of the biggest challenges facing aspiring makeup artists is how to gain valuable industry experience. The old adage ‘practice makes perfect’ is especially applicable to those in the makeup arts. A good makeup school will offer it’s students fieldwork opportunities for exactly this reason, which is why The School of Professional Makeup leapt at the chance to work with some big players in the cosmetic industry.

Canadian fashion & style gurus Steven Sabados and Chris Hyndman have been promoting products for a few years now. Recently, they’ve been hired on as spokespeople for Proctor & Gamble’s ‘Everything for the Family, Something Just for You’ program to share their knowledge and expertise of the fashion and beauty industries. The objective is to not only pitch Proctor & Gamble products, but to also raise money for various charities, which include the Canadian Cancer Society and the Children’s Miracle Network. Wal-Mart will play host to in-store events, giveaways and fundraisers. Both Wal-Mart and Procter & Gamble are hoping to raise an estimated $460,000 for charity through this partnership, while also encouraging women to do something special for themselves at the same time. Shoppers will not only be introduced to the latest in health and beauty information, but also to a wide range of new P&G products.

The School of Professional Makeup was the only makeup school invited to participate in the most recent promotion, titled "5-Minute Oasis" with Olay. ‘Coincidentally, the advertising agency promoting the event, plus Chris Hyndman from The Designer Guys both approached me at the same time.’ Says Robert Closs, Founder and Managing Director. ‘They both felt that it might be a great idea for the school to get involved.’

With the theme being personal style, this was a live appearance with Steven & Chris on stage. A model was chosen from the audience, who then received a live makeover complete with Hollywood tips and tricks. Three students from The School of Professional Makeup were chosen to help out with the offstage makeovers. The offstage makeovers lasted on average about four hours, and included skin care analysis and recommendations, plus a mini makeover using Cover Girl products.

Shoppers were delighted to have the opportunity to take some time out for themselves. This not only translated into a wonderful opportunity for the aspiring makeup artists to gain some practical hands on experience, but it also represented the type of fieldwork opportunities The School of Professional Makeup looks for on behalf of their students.

‘Our school is known as ‘the industry school’, says Closs. ‘Our instructors are all working makeup artists, and this allows us to be connected to what’s happening in the industry. We make sure we pass these opportunities onto our students, so they can gain invaluable industry experience.’

‘This was a great opportunity for students to actually do something in the field.’ Says Lisa Mandel, an instructor at the school. ‘They’re excited to get the chance to actually see and apply what they’ve learned.’

Recent graduate Natalie Sanchez appreciated the chance to get out there and network. Networking and self-promotion is vital to any aspiring makeup artist - industry veterans estimate that eighty percent of jobs come through networking and self-promotion. ‘Through this gig I got the opportunity to meet many different people, it’s one of the best opportunities for networking.’ Says Sanchez. ‘Working with Rob and The Designer Guys made me realize first hand that this industry is so fast paced and diverse, and you can take it as far as you like depending on your own ambition.’

Previous fieldwork opportunities have included gigs for The Discovery Channel, The Miss Universe Canada Pageant, and the Miss Latina Canada swimsuit calendar, to name a few.
